When customer specifications allow, Austin Bridge & Road actively produces hot mix asphalt (HMA) using reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and reclaimed asphalt shingles (RAS). In reusing materials, Austin Bridge & Road reduces consumption of virgin oil required in HMA production; reduces consumption of virgin aggregate required in HMA production; reduces overall asphalt plant energy consumption; reduces waste sent to landfills; and reduces fuel emissions and road congestion.

To this end, Austin uses the maximum allowable reclaimed asphalt product in the production of state-certified asphalt for roads and highways. In 2022, Austin used more than 275,000 tons of recycled products; a 6% increase year-over-year vs. 2021.
