SAN ANTONIO – On May 14, Austin Bridge & Road and joint venture partner Fluor Corporation – Lone Star Constructors, NEX – broke ground on Phase 1 of the Interstate 35 (I-35) Northeast Expansion (NEX) South project in San Antonio, Texas, for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).
The groundbreaking event, led by officials from TxDOT including Texas Transportation Commission Chairman J. Bruce Bugg Jr., alongside the project team from Lone Star Constructors, NEX, and politicians at the state and local level, attracted substantial media coverage from local news outlets. This highlights the project’s importance to the traveling public as well as to the enhanced safety measures and congestion relief anticipated upon completion.
“I-35 is one of the most congested roadways in Texas,” said Chairman Bugg. “Getting Texans out of congestion is a high priority for TxDOT and the Commission and this project will bring much needed improvements to improve safety and mobility, address continued growth and reduce travel time for drivers.”
The $700 million design-build project includes the addition of three elevated lanes, including two main lanes and one high-occupancy vehicle lane in each direction, from the I-35/I-410 South interchange to the I-35/I-410 North interchange along I-35. The I-35 elevated lanes will provide a direct connection to I-410 South at the I-35/I-410 South interchange. Substantial completion is anticipated in 2028.
