The DART Blue Line project expanded an existing light rail line from the downtown Garland Station to a new station in downtown Rowlett. As the prime contractor, Austin constructed 4.8 miles of light rail double-track guideway running along an existing freight rail right of way. Scope included multiple drainage and utility relocations and improvements, seven bridges – the largest of which is more than 2,600 feet long – ballast walls, cut walls, MSE retaining walls, and 8,300 linear feet of freight track realignment.
Trains are powered by four new traction power substations and an overhead cantenary system. Austin exceeded the 42% DBE requirement by 16%. Despite the large number of subcontractors, Austin’s quality and safety standards remained undiminished, and the company celebrated two years with no lost time accidents. Austin earned substantial and final completion incentives.
